Kathmandu – Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has started importing electricity from India as production has decreased due to winter. However, exports are also continuing, as per the NEA’s daily data.
Currently, 552 megawatt hours (23 MW) of electricity is being imported daily. According to NEA sources, electricity is being imported when needed, even if not 24 hours a day.
Similarly, exports are also continuing. Currently, 4,762 megawatt hours (198 MW) of electricity is being exported daily, according to NEA data.
Most of Nepal has run-of-river (ROR) hydropower projects. Nepal has an installed capacity of 4,000 MW. During the monsoon, when there is a lot of water in the rivers, electricity can be generated at full capacity, which is enough to export electricity to India and Bangladesh.
During the winter, the water level in the rivers decreases. As a result, electricity production also decreases. And at this time, electricity has to be imported from India to meet domestic demand. During the peak season, 5-600 MW of electricity has to be imported from India.
